Hello everyone,

My wife and I leave this Monday for our first trek together. I'm very excited :D

My last trip to Nepal was in Dec/Jan 2002/03 when the monarchy was still alive and kicking. I have a stash of currency from then. Is it still legal tender in the country? I assume so, but I don't want to have my hands cut off by some crazy Maoist for supporting the (ex-)King.

Thanks,

h.

The old currency was still in use earlier this year. Some new 500Rs notes have been issued which do not have a picture of the king but the old notes were still in the majority. The best change has been the introduction of coins (1Rs, 2Rs) to replace the lowest value notes which used to be incredibly dirty - 99% dirt, 1% paper - but you will still get these. You will find that everything costs more than in 2002/2003. Have a great trek!
