You don't need a porter or guide to trek in Annapurna. If you can carry your own pack and prefer to be independent then it's easy enough to find your way around.
But it is safe & wise to have some reliable company. If you have other trekkers as companions then all well & good, if you don't when you set off then you will by the time you finish.
It is probably not advisable to trek alone, and it is better to be safe than sorry, and the mountains can be very unforgiving if you are caught out unawares - for whatever reason. If you are unsure then consider hiring a local porter/guide.
I hope that you have a fun/safe trek, whoever you travel with.

Well it depends on you. You don't need a guide - the trail is fairly clear, and you certainly don't need a porter - carying your own crap is definetely more rewarding. Having said all that, there is actually nothing wrong with hiring a guide or a porter or even both - afterall the Nepalese people need your cash. Just beware of the many incincere touts you will meet - even on the internet. Remember that the porters or guides get only a fraction of the what the guys in Kathmandu agencies pocket for themselves - or worse the western adventure companies outside Nepal.
I have trekked the Annapurna region extensively and can confirm that it is unlikely that your trek is going to be a lonely affair (apple pie trail has been floated as an alternative name for the circuit).
Buy a good guide book, read up about the place in advance and above all remember to acclimatise in a sensible manor. Hire a guide if you are not sure.
Have fun - I know you will. Remember don't be penny-pinching or too flash with your cash.
Ps
I also agree with Oli's reply

Hi,
I dont think u would have any problems in doing this by yourself. The trail was full of people in September and that was a quite month. The moaist and army seem to have got rid of any potential problems by just being there - so they make it safer (believe it or not).
I would suggest you get a porter as the cost is low and it will give the country something back.
You can buy just about everything on the trail so it shows u how many toursists are around!

Bill
