I am currently planning to take off on an extended "world trek" in 2006 or 2007, and definitely want to live in Nepal for a while (probably Kathmandu) after spending 3 weeks there trekking this past April. Has anyone spent extended time in Nepal, and can you share any information about your experience? I'm also wanting to travel around SE Asia...anyone have any positive feedback, advice, comments, etc.?

Hey there,

I've lived in Nepal for about a year in 1999-2000. It was a great experience living there. The people are wonderful, I never got sick from the food or otherwise, and it's a great place to go explore and relax. There are great grocery stores, restaurants, bars and clubs that can remind you of home if you need to get away from the natives ;) . It was a great experience and I can't wait to go back this winter.

I volunteered in Tansen, Palpa and loved teaching at an all girl school and empowering them to stand up for themselves and just have fun. I will be visiting my host family and students and friends when I arrive and it's hard to control my excitement.

Best of luck in your adventure, I'd reccommend living outside of Kathmandu but if that's where you planned to stay, you'll have a great time.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Take care
