Hello everyone,

We are leaving in 3 weeks so I am starting to have to organise a few things for our trip.

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay (other than the KGH) in Kathmandu? I am looking for something about the same price as the KGH preferably with a nice roof top and a garden.

Thanks,

h.

P.S. Thanks to everyone here who has contributed the excellent FAQ's and tips threads etc. It just seemed to me that places to stay in KTM were missing - or maybe I am just going blind ... ;)

Hi hatless.

I've never stayed in KGH but I understand the offer quite a range of rooms/prices. If you mean something roughly mid-range then there is a huge choice of hotels, and every one has pros & cons. I've taken to staying in the Potala Guesthouse, has roof & garden and it does right for me. But I am quite understanding that everyone has their own preferences, and I think recommendations are a bit more personal than for places to eat. You'll sample far more restaurants than hotels. Did you find the "good places to eat (http://www.trekinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5676)" thread?

ps: dont forget to pack your hat(s), be prepared for sun and cold, a hat is useful :)

Happy trekking

Thanks Oli - I had a look on the web and your place does look nice. Any other suggestions welcome too.

I did find the food guide. Very useful for someone who likes eating as much as I do!

We use the International Guest House. It's handy for the top end of Thamel and we always find the staff very welcoming. There is a very nice garden and there are loungers, tables and chairs on the rooftop although these were looking rather worn and tired when we were last there. We prefer rooms in the main building to those in the extension which are noisy!

I recommend the Norbu Linka Hotel. It small and located just out of Thamel in a quiet neighbourhood. The staff are wonderful. The problem I found with KGH is that is huge. Staff never gets to know you or give personal assistance.
It has a roof top retsurant although I have never been up there. I always ehad out to the Weizen bakery for my croissant and cap.

On my last visit last year I tried the International Guest House, just outside the main area of Thamel. It was very secure ( with locked gates and guard at night ) and reasonably quiet given the area. Room rates were OK and came with decent breakfast included. Best of all, there is a little courtyard garden with an immaculate grassy middle area that my kids really loved. Very similar sort of deal to KGH but much better value and more of a personal service.

Nameste, if you don't want the noise of Thamel, try the Eden Hotel near the end of Freak St. Little hole in the wall with some nice rooms and some ratty ones also, the restaurant on top of the hotel has good grinds and views. Happy trails
