Hi Kelly,
I too am an aussie. Have been to Nepal in 2000 and 2003. Both times trekking in the Khumbu (Everest) region.
As a starting point I suggest you get your hands on the Lonely Planet "Trekking in Nepal Himalaya" guidebook and read it from cover to cover. This should hopefully answer all your initial questions and give you some idea of the length and dificulty of the major treks.
Cheers

Is it 23 days for trekking alone, or is this your entire time in Nepal?
Secondly it depends how much you want to spend, but you can survive on about 20 AUD per day on trek if you trek independently, for your accommodation and meals. Reasonable hotels in Thamel can be between 15 and 40 USD per night. Flying in/out of Lukla will set you back about 180 USD. Buses to either Jiri, Pokhara, Besisahar of Dunche are cheap.
Food is cheap in Nepal comparatively.
