I found the lodge food to be fine. There is a variety of items on the menus and as you gain elevation the size of the menu is a bit smaller. Boiled water is readily available so there is no need to contribute to the garbage problem with buying bottled water. I carry pristine for water treatment in case of needing water mid day. This is not much of a problem as boiled water is most readily available. Personally I would not use a company but hire a guide and porter. Just eat at the Lodges and stay in the lodges.

I too am planning a trip to Gokyo and Kala Patthar in November and would like to join at least one other person doing this same trek. Are you flying in and out of Lukla? Are you interested in having another person join you?
I have been communicating with the various trekking companies listed in Lonely Planet and as mentioned in your message, they put you up in lodges where the food is provided and provide a guide and porter. So far the two most promising companies are Sherpa Trekking Services and Safe Journeys Adventure Treks. Are you interested in comparing notes and perhaps travelling together. I am a fit, mature, professional woman who climbed Mt Kilimanjaro last year. Cheers, April
