You'd need a tent and food for a couple of days to explore the upper reaches of the valley. Tibetans routinely cross the pass to bring trade to Namche, but you really wouldn't want to run into any Chinese border guards up there.

There is one police checkpost somewhere between Thame and the pass, getting there unhindered is not 100% certain. Sneak around in the dark?

thx for all the replies. I contacted TAAN and was told that trekking to the top of the pass is possible requiring a special permit for $10 a week. Im thinking security is much stricter on the Tibetan side after the recent Chinese crackdown. The pass appears to be the Cho La on steroids with more glacier walking however yaks frequently use the path and ill prepared refugees often make it. If conditions are good and I can find a guide I hope to attempt. Hres a great site with lots of info. Cheers. Mtncanyon

I have been at Nangapa La, but it's long time back in 1988. At that time there was only a check post in Thame, and no problem, the always sllep long. I joined a group of tibetan traders from Tingri, the accepted to cary my equipment on there yaks. It was my plan to go all the way with them to Tingri.
It's a wonderful trek, with great views to Rolwalling Himal, and from the moraine hills of Kangchung, one have to enter the moraine covered glacier, but it's not so dageruos as it sound. I don't know how it is now, but at that time november 1988, severel groups of traders crossed the pass a day. So the route across the glacier very marked by yakdong.
We slep at Dzazamba, at 5400m. The pass itself is easy, only high 5700m. And nest day we camped by a shelter called Dzablum.
Ther are spectakular istowers on both side, specialy on the tibetan, close to Cho Oyu Basecamp.
At Dzablum i ran out of food and will, I simply get afraid. Told my companions that I turned around.
I like to go back if it is allowed today. Bring enough food, warm cloth, but don't go into Tibet, these borderguards are dangerous.
Take care good look
