Has anyone used ATM for bank cash withdrawal this year (2009) with bank or card on the CIRRUS network? Perhaps at Nepal Grindlays Bank Ltd?
(Lonely Planet site mentioned that "travellers have reported that these machines don't take cards that run on the Cirrus system" but this may be dated.)
I have only used ATMs a few times in Mexico where I was surprised to get reasonable exchange rates so hope I can get decent rate in Nepal.

I always had problems getting money from my account.
I was only ever to get cash out in Nepal of my credit card. Luckily my credit limit is healthy (or unhealthy) enough.
It could be me, I am not the brightest cookie in the jar when it comes to banking, accounts etc...

I guess its crazy to hope there may be ATMs using the cirus network in Lukla. Do most people bring cash on a trek, and are there many cases of theft reported.

I have never heard about thefts from trekkers. How did they manage their money if it was stolen?
During the past 25 years I have carried relativelly large amounts of cash with me (like all the pay for a staff of 25 for 3+ weeks) and never lost a paisa.

Info as of Oct 2009:
Cirrus cards work fine in Kathmandu, Thamel in particular. I suggest using machines associated with larger banks and keep receipts.
If you use a credit card I have a positive balance beore I leave home so you don't pay interest.
As for Lukla and Namche etc, take cash. Never had a problem, but always keep your cash and passport on you at all times.
