Advice please! If we wish to hire a guide/porter independently for a trek what is the best way to get insurance for him once we are in Kathmandu?

Hello there
It is best to join your trip with a trekking company as they already have insured Guide/Porters. its expensive to arrange the individual insurange policy. The trekking company has group insurance which comes cheaper. Please drop us e-mail if you need any assistance.
thanks

I hear you you can do it relatively easily these days in KTD, and the independent guide should be able to direct and come with to to whatever office you need to go for that. If you go on one of the "popular" treks, and are reasonable in your demands regarding weight to carry, pace of waliking and of gaining altitude, etc. I am not sure you would bother. But someone else may know more on this.

Roy,
Here are a couple of sites with independent guides and porter-guides etc. that have been recomended. I guess if the client has bothered to send a testimony and a picture to these sites, it means the guides have been more than reasonably good, making the trekking experience memorable in some way. Santaman is recommended by me.

It costs $2 per day per porter. If you are using an agency to get your internal airline ticket for you, they can arrange for the porter insurance.

The 2$ per day sounds awfully low. That would convert to about 150 rupees per day.
