You can buy almost anything and everything in Kathmandu. I think it depends on where you come from. I live in the mountains so I buy quality and bring it from home. If you live in London UK or Florida just using the fake stuff will serve your purposes fine. You can also rent stuff for your trek in Kathmandu. It comes down to whether you will use it after the trek or not.
