A friend and I are planning to trek in February. We have been looking at the Jomsom trek - the guide book says there are over 3,000 steps at Ghorapani!!! We (two middle-aged overweight folks) are a little intimidated by the sounds of that. Has anyone done those steps? if you can tell us what to expect that would be most helpful.

As it is, we are not planning on going above 3,000m - any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Yvonne

Hi to grandpa.. I noticed your e-mail address and live in Seattle and have done several treks in the Annapurnas in the last three years.. I also plan to be there in March.. I agree with your advice about doing the steps and training some beforehand. I have seen many older folks (in their 70s) along the way), and many "overweight" people climbing in hot weather (last October it was really hot and humid); it is well worth the climb, especially if the rhododendruns are in bloom and the whole trek is wonderful!

it is really a very long hard day uphill and in the afternoon the sun is just burning You.
The first three times I went from Tatopani to gorepani in one day but then i tried it once to do in two days.
Thats when it start to be a very pleasant and interesting treck.
It allows to you have a long and delicious breakfast in tatopani, sipping fresh juice under lemon trees- not to have to start very early n the morning.and it is not anymore a race again the clock.
I go to either to Ghara (when I leave Tatopani after 12 o clock) or to sikha.
The next day is then a very nice 6 hour walk through rhododendron forests.
Have a nice trek

Good on you Sian! I think two months to to AC and EBC/Gokyo is fantastic. You have plenty of time to take it easy, relax, not feel pressured to walk to a certain point in a given day.
I will be in Nepal between 9 April and beginning of May. I am still not sure whenter I want to do AC or Gokyo/Cho La/EBC. Will probably make up my mind when I land in KTD. If you or chickenplucker would still be around, look for a good looking 43 year old (oh yeah!!) with short silver hair and a black t-shirt with silver "Shave My Yak" on it.
