Hi all.

I'm visiting the Himalayas for the first time in early Oct & doing the Annapurna Sanctuary trek. I've been scouring this excellent site & found lots of useful advice on what to take & what to leave at home.

One question though - I have a 3qtr length Thermarest self-inflating mattress. Would this be of any value to take?? Are the mattresses in the lodges horrendously uncomfortable??

You'll find the mattresses are all good to sleep on,especially after trekking up and down all those stone steps! The thermerest is not necessary at all.

A thermarest mattress is definitely not necessary. But sometimes the mattresses in the lodges are just a thin piece of foam on a hardboard bed. If you want to get that bit more comfort then get yourself a double room to yourself and borrow the spare foam from the other bed. ;)

Nice tip! ;)

I do that most of the time. And when travelling with a companion I try to get a triple room. One of us gets the foam, the other gets the bedding for a bit of extra cushioning. Or I ask for extra blankets and put them underneath.

In essence I concur with the wise persons above: taking a Thermarest or some such on any of the "classic" Nepali treks is not necessary.
