Dear all,

I would appreciate your advice on how big a danger avalanches present on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in mid-November. I am trying to choose between doing the AS and the Jomsom treks in November, and am leaning towards the former, my only doubt being the chance of having to turn back in the middle of the trek or getting stuck in the ABC in case of an avalanche. I know the AS trek is about the only one where avalanches can be a problem, but it also seems hard to beat in terms of what you can see in a relatively short amount of time. Can anyone advise on the avalanches please?

Thanks a lot.

For the most part the avalanche problem is only a real concern in Spring, ie: the winter thaw.

I dont think the risk of avalanche should influence your trek selection - just like the issues with altitude - be Aware of it and Act on it .

The main problem spots are above Doban village, on the leg to Machapuchare Base Camp. Hiunchulli is unseen but above you to the west. There is an alternative trail here which should offer better protection during the danger period. Ask local advice so that you know where this is - you might like to take it anyway

The last casualties here were an Australian family in spring 2001, who ignored warnings of locals. and I think more lives were claimed the previous year.

I must admit to being blissfully unaware of the problem on my first passing - even pausing to ponder over a pile of snow and debris at the base of a cliff!! - until the penny dropped - Be aware of where you are stopping for your rests. ie: obvious avalanche chutes or under bluffs.

If your ARE exceptionally unlucky - be assured you wont know what hit you.
