In asking a route question someone mentioned that in his opinion Tangbouche is a dump. Do you agree? He said push on to dingboche?

"Dump" is a bit harsh. :p

The monastery is the obvious attraction to Tengboche, and if you are interested in the local Buddhist culture then you'll want to visit. They start prayers with cymbals and drums at 4am so no chance of sleeping in late. There are only a couple of small lodges at Tengboche, space may be at a premium especially during the Mani Rimdu festival (Oct/Nov). Its up on a ridge so (cloud permitting) the view is quite good.

Just 15-20mins further along is Deboche, there is a convent and a few lodges. This place would be a good alternative if Tengboche is too busy. It's in a wood so the views are not as good, but it's quieter and has batter water. It was here that Escher suggested, not Dingboche as that is a fair way further up the trail.

Well I would not call it a dump but I would say they are not the nicest teahouse in the Khumbu. I have always stayed at Deboche 15 minutes out of tengboche on the way to EBC. There is a very nice teahouse there with hot showers, nice rooms. Can't recall the name but I am sure someone else will here.
On the other hand some good baking in Tengboche!
