Anyone who needs cheering up this morning after reading of all the doom and gloom, ie, more stabbings in the streets, stock markets collapsing, Iran/israel escalating conflict, rising oil prices etc., I would urge you to log on to Youtube and type in the search words "Nepali" "folk" "Pokhara" "Fewa".

You will then be treated to 9min and 8 secs of the most uplifting Nepali folk music set against the most beautiful scenery in the world. It does it for me every time I watch and listen to it.

Let us know what you think of it.

Can`t wait until October. I will be on the Everest Base Camp trek from the
5th to the 23rd. Anyone else be out there during that time, perhaps meet up for a beer and a curry? Ollie?

a1jbg,

There´s a good chance I will be in Nepal between 10 or 11 of October, and the 23 or 24. I am doing Langtang this time, with a good friend who trekked there in a daze of hash and pot in the 70ies, and wishes to relive his youth... Minus the Swedish sheila who was his companion at the time, that is. And, I hope, minus the hash and the pot. Or not too much of it anyway.

Please keep me upto date with your moves. Maybe we can catch up in Thamel at the end.

Hi Yakshaver
It looks as if we are going to just miss each other at both ends of our treks, I arrive in KTM on 6th October and go on trek on the 8th, back in KTM on 21st and 22nd October, fly home on the 23rd.

Did you have a look at the video on Youtube?

Perhaps I will run into you at some point on trek or run into Yakshaver in Kathmandu. I arrive KTM 10 October, leave perhaps 4-5 days later to trek towards EBC at a leisurely pace. Then depart Nepal around 14 Nov.

Hehe, yeah, there are some nice Nepali folk song/vids up on YouTube. I very much enjoyed "Kire mire jalirumala (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57cxHGo6SeI)" And "A Song on Marpha (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3KnKm8HZ2k)" has brought a grin.

I get back to Nepal in the last few days of November, starting my trek from Jiri so I'm looking forward to the bus drive out there, maybe like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMAm4tzZOTw).

Brilliant videos Oli, thanks for the links.
Pity we will miss each other in KTM. Don`t forget to try the chicken tikka massala in La Bistro, at the T junction in Thamel.

Well, I listened to it Oli but I can`t say it cheered me up!
What was it about?

P.S. My dodgy knees and ankles managed to get me to EBC and the top of Kala Pattar last month. It was a brilliant trek.
On the subject of tipping, there were 12 of us trekking plus a Nepali team leader, 3 guides and 6 porters. We gave $50 each, a total of $600 tips to be shared between them, and everyone (except an Australian couple who only wanted to give $10 each!) seemed pretty happy with that.

Maybe that last link was not quite so cheery. But I found the music to be quite haunting, and I was half expecting one of the ladies here to say "cooo..." at the cute boy & girl. I don't understand the words but I hope their story wasn't so sad at the end. :o

Here is another link (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UQcKAdT41No), this guy is a rather good sarangi player - definitely has more talent than his mate on the left!

Edit: Also, this (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9q5WLFFWiGk&feature=related) is like a 20 minute soap opera musical :D

Well done for making it up KP, aijbg, I'm glad your legs held out :)
