Trekking to Makalu

Next year i would like to make trip to Makalu Basecamp.How is the situation there?Is it safe to trek alone?Thanks for advise.

Maybe someone there knows about the situation around Makalu.
I understand that two years ago a climbing expedition was aksed to "donate" USD 100 per person by the maiosts in the area. In the end they have haglled on a smaller sum. I understand that ocasionally around Makalu individual trekkers have also been asked to "contribute to the cause", not much by western standards, but still annoying. However I am not aware of anyone having been harmed or outright robbed in the Makalu area. Someone else may have better information.
