Hello
I'm looking to do a trek in August to the base camp. I ideally want to travel alone, but from what I have read, I need a guide. Can anyone please tell me how much I should be looking at for this.
I'm fairly fit and should be able to carry a rucksack, but maybe I would need to put some other bits into the guides pack.
Many thanks

There is no legal (or real practical) requirement for a guide if you are going to Everest or Annapurna base camp.
If you want to hire someone hireing a porter-guide is better idea, because he can carry your pack, something that is below a real guide's job description.
Guide: white collar job. 15-20 USD/day
Porter-Guide: practising to be a guide (often eager to help and learn), know some english, must still do manual labor. 10-15 USD/day
Porter: manual labor, speaks no english. 6-10 USD/day

I think one of the big points on having a guide is to have a resourse about local culture etc. Not just a person to carry a bag. RR

Hi People - many thanks for this help.
I have never been to Nepal before and will be on a tight budget and also timeline.
My Mrs has done a walk to the Base Camp - she said that you need someone who is going to know what to do if I get ill. I don't want a buffon who will leave me on the mountain if I get sick! ;-)
I'm going to take a few Meal Replacement Bars with me and also other food - i'm fairly fit and will carry a small pack myself, but maybe could do with letting someone carry up to 5Kg of clothes etc.
Where is the best place to find some a guide/porter? On the net or in Katmandu?
Many thanks again for your post - i really appreciate it.

Get a recommendation from one of the old hands here and email the guide for a quote. Have a look through the Recommendations forum for some of those recommendations.

I have always used a guide. Aside from the fact that Nepalis need the currency the above comments are correct. Guides provide insight and opportunities that you would not have own your own. They will assist if you are ill from altitude or otherwise. IN some areas where it is busy my guide would leave at 5 am to make sure we had good accommodation in the next village.
I deal with a couple of guices whic I can recommend. jangbusherpa3@hotmail.com and pembal15@yahoo.com
On pricing I suspect we will se an increase in all costs. The quick rise of fuel and food costs will need to be passed on like it is at home.
