trekking permits

I am trekking in the Everest area in the November. I last trekked in Nepal 5 years ago doing the Annapurna Circuit and have "fond" memories of obtaining a trekking permit in Kathmandu beforehand. I have heard that this process no longer exists....can anyone confirm this and what the new procedures are?

Thanks for the info. We are walking in from Jiri (or wherever the bus stops now that the road is being pushed further) and walking back out the same way. Would love to walk out to Tumlingtar, but am not sure if we have enough time....have to wait and see!
