I have trekked in the Everest region alone--Gokyo-Chukung--Kala Pattar. It is not a problem. You are never really alone as there are always people on the trail. You can leave the porter thing till Lukla. If you do just take your time in asking questions , negotiating prices etc. The worst problem is getting someone who has poor language (assuming English). If you get them in KTM you have to pay for th flight.

If you do go alone keep your weight down. Most people take way too much. The cleverer ones have a pack weight of 10kg.

You need to realize that the trails are obvious. The main thing is to take your time and enjoy. Most groups go too fast, although their are not carrying anything.

Thanks for the advice. I will at least need a porter as I intend to bring some camera/video equipment and I am only in average shape (right now).

Will guides/Sherpas carry loads? or only porters?

I understand that hiring in KTM I would have to pay the arifare for who I hired but would a reputable agency in KTM be able make arrangements for a guide to meet me in Lukla?

Yes you can get porter /guides. Remember if you getting someone form Lukla this is their back yard, Evben if it isnt eg they are from the valley lower down or KTM it is a matter of them asking the locals about the relevant info.

Many do not relaize that the Khumbu main trails are not difficult or complex. I personally would get a porter ( if that is your inclination) in Lukla.
