Hello again?
My wife is a little worried clipp drops and narrow trails.
when we go trekking with the children 7 and 10 years old in october.
I dont remember how the jomsom treek was was there 1987.
Is there any scary narrow parts.. and if so any otherway to avoid it.
Other suggestions for a family trekk langtang helambu etc....
Thanks Tommy

Tommy, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I don't remember any "hairy" track section on the Jomsom Trek. We were there in March and the only "interesting" sections were on the other side of the pass on the Marsyangdi side of the Annapurna Circuit. You and your kids will be fine.

Yes, as Escher says, I don't think you'll have a problem on Jomsom. When I trekked there last time in July last year, we've had a rainy night and part of the trail fell off into the Kali Gandaki near Tatopani. We had a detour of about 1 hour, but we were ok. The porters will take the kids on their backs if there is any whiff of a problem. I would not worry.

Tommy,
I trekked with my kids of similar age to yours, plus one smaller one. We did the Ghorepani/Poon Hill trek, which I think is probably hillier and steeper than the Jomson one from what I remember. We had no problems on the trail. The Jomson trail will I'm sure be OK, any local difficulties due to landslides etc can be dealt with on the ground as circumstances dictate. Most of the main Nepalese trails I have been on in the popular tourist areas at the lower altitudes have been well-engineered and fine for kids, with care.
Personally, I would stay clear of anything at high altitude or that has poor communications or is very remote and basic. With kids in tow safety is paramount, and for me that means easy evacuation and low altitude trekking.
In my humble opinion ( I stand to be corrected!! ) the Langtang trek is a bit too one-dimensional to make it interesting for kids, and you do go up quite high before the valley opens up and gets more interesting.
As well as your Jomson option you might want to consider the Siklis Eco trek ( depending on time of year trekking ), the Royal Trek or maybe some meandering in the Ghandrung/Chomrong/Poon Hill area.
Best wishes
Paul

Hey Tommy,
Did you decide on your trek? I'm off to Nepal next week with just my son this time. I'm thinking of doing half of Helambu trek then dropping down to Gosainkund then Syabrubensi, followed by a few days in Ganesh area. We shouldn't need any guides or porters and hopefully the lodges will be OK.:D
