We (3) are planning to be in the Nepal in Oct 2003. With only two weeks vacation (flights to & from US included) we would like to know the best trek to take. What is a good site for weather.... that time of year? How long is the EBC trek? At what altitude? We hiked Manchu Pichu last year..will it be the same level of a hike?

Hi Cindy,
With only 2 weeks including air travel, you are limited in some ways (I also come from the western US), but there are great treks in the Annapurna region you can do in that time frame.. if you e-mail me at dahl_julie @hotmail, I can tell you about the treks I have done over the last 3 years. I have been to Nepal five times (obviously I love it) and would love to give you any information that may help. I am also going back in October 2003.

I have tried to send you an email but it keeps coming back!
Thank you for the information! Is Oct the best time to go? What will =
the weather be like? There are 3 girls in our group, we will be =
traveling Atlanta, BOM, KTD. We will probably spend a day or 2 in KTD =
then go from there. What trek do you recommend? What about a guide &
sleeping arrangements? I wonder if we will have to have two rooms the =
whole way with 3 hikers? I would welcome any advise.

Hi,
We are also interested in treking for a few weeks. I hate cold, can walk forever on flat surfaces, but would need to train for mountains. Do you have any suggestions for us? We are thinking of Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and a jungle trip.
Thanks!

Yes we are coming to Nepal.
There will be 6-8 women. 40- 55 yrsa old all in good shape. Most want to be able to seee EBC we have 12-16 days. Plan to depart the us on Oct 9th or 10th & need to be back no later than oct 27th. So Can we get to EBC from KDU on a 7-8 day trek?

You might consider Peru & the inca trail to Manchu Pichu. There is a train & the sights are great! We did the hike/camp but some took the train from Cuzco & loved it.

Dear Cindy: Sorry to put the pragmatic damper on your plans, but with the extremely tight time limit you placed yourselves in, you are setting yourselves up for disaster, if you are serious about getting to EBC. As a previous person indicated, you need to fly to Lukla, then onto Namche Bazar. No matter how fit you are, there is going to be at least one (most likely more of you) that with the rushed schedule, you will take on far more altitude per day than you should. It can have very serious consequences. There are other lower altitude options, or postpone till you have at least three weeks (including travel time to Nepal). Best wishes from the Northeast USA. - Julius

As a former volunteer physician at the Periche aid post I would say the only way you can get to EBC on that schedule is to fly over it.

If you try you may have to be evacuated in a helicopter.

The altitude requires at least 6 days to get to EBC if you acclimatize well, and probably more. You might aim for Tangboche, or you might consider a trek to Annapurna sanctuary and maybe a rafting trip.

Buy medical travel insurance.
