Hi Marcus- Prices vary considerably with regard to trekking. And paying more will not necessaily ensure a more professional service or a better experience. What I would recommend is to use a freelance guide who is a very good friend of mine who I have known for several years. That way you can avoid all the additional costs of going through a travel agency. My friend Satya Lama is a goverment-licensed trekking guide, with extensive experience of all the major trekking routes. He is friendly and knowledgeable about Nepali history, culture and peoples, and speaks pretty good English. He is also thoroughly professional and can deal with any problems you might have whilst trekking, and can even help out with local tours of interesting places in the Kathmandu Valley (Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, Boudnath Stupa, Swayambunath, Pashupatinath, Dakshinkali and so on). You can contact Satya at satyalama@hotmail.com. I Hope you find this advice useful.
Have a good trip, Piers
