I just returned from Nepal about 3 months ago. Maoist problems are more on Everest/Khumbu treks than Annapurnas altho there are rip-off artists that are saying they are Maoist and want a fee to go up the trail. I found a larger army presence on the Circuit so the Maoists are a bit more contained on those trails. I saw absolutely no army on EBC/Kala patar trek and heard plenty of tales from trekkers I met in the teahouses that had problems between Jiri and Lukla. I had no problems and I was up in the Annapurnas and Khumbu region for almost 3 months alone with no guide or porter Happy trekking

Michael,
I have done the Annapurna BC trek twice and, following my recent redundancy, am now planning to do the full Everest BC / Kala Patar / Gokyo trek over a 30 day period or so. I have 2 questions:

1. You heard about tourists being hassled for cash or encountering other problems from Jiri to Lukla. Did you yourself walk that leg during your trek? I would prefer to do mine from Jiri in order to improve my fitness ahead of the higher altitude trekking and will be using a guide & porter but do not want trouble. Surely being with locals means a lower likelihood of being hassled?

2. We are planning to start the trek in late April and continue through to late May. Is that two late for the Khumbu region? Reports seems to be mixed on whether May is too late or is OK. Clearly I want to see the great peaks as much as possible but do not need blue sky from dawn to dusk every day either.

Any feedback would be most welcome.
Best regards ... Charlie Harris
