What we did was initiate email correspondense with 2 companies before leaving for Nepal. when we arrived in Kathmandu we met with each company to establish pricing. The next day we met with proposed guides from each company to see who we felt most comfortable spending the time with. The competition between companies kept pricing fair and we chose based on the guide that we felt most comfortable with. So a couple of days to arrange the guide and this is while we were getting over our jet lag and enjoying the sightes and souinds of Kathmandu.

Hi there- I am in Kathmandu right now, and have been delighted to discover that the situation for tourists is better than I expected, even though I was aware of the ceasefire. For several years now I have been good friends with Satya Lama (satyalama@hotmail.com) of Timal Trekking (www.timaladventuretrek.com.np, www.jmilne.org) and would highly recommend the services of this company. They can do you a tea-house trek for $20 a day, although of course a camping trek with porters costs more, maybe $35 a day. You might be able to negotiate on this. Feel free to contact me further as I expect to be in Nepal for at least a year (conducting research in Chitwan).

All the best, Piers Locke

Attached is a good site with contacts and recommendations of guides & porters. It is current. I can warmily recommend Santaman, I have employed him three times.
