I just did EBC in November. I did it alone with no guide or porter. Your deciscion on this matter. Folks say you get a more personal aspect with a guide or porter, but you will be interfacing with Sherpa hillfolk all along the trail. I recommend good hiking boots for ankle stability, muddy or snow conditions you might encounter, and added warmth as it is miserably cold at the higher altitudes. Bring good wool socks for nite time relaxing.I like to trek in light cotton socks as you will be sweating with the exertion of portions of the trail. If you fly into Lukla you will avoid the Maoist problems that are happening between Jiri and Lukla. I agree with Yakshaver, Gokyo is gorgeous whereas EBC is a bunch of rocks and garbage with no views other than a closeup of Khumbu glacier, but you will be following Khumbu for miles anyway and can look all you want. It is cool to say you have been to EBC but hardly worth the effort. Happy trekking
