Alex,
I trekked there last March and felt 100% safe the whole way around the Annapurna Circuit. I saw no Maoist activity whatsoever. There was supposed to be Maoists around Besisahar but I saw none, and also in Beni but I finished the trek in Birethanti instead. In my recent experience (I have trekked 3 times since 2000) I have not felt threatened at all in Nepal. Yes of course there is stuff going on and occasionally there have been problems in tourist areas (Kathmandu, Patan etc) but you really have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
If you are careful and well informed and take the usual advice of avoiding crowds etc. then I expect your experience of Nepal will be a wonderful one. So be aware that there are problems in Nepal but you are also very unlikely to get caught up in something especially on the Annapurna circuit.
BTW I am taking my own advice and will be going back myself in March.
