Hi everyone,

We will be trekking to Gokyo in April. My guide book recommends climbing Gokyo Ri for view of Everest and also says that this is about 5500 metres above sea level, and that the Gokyo trek is listed as medium-hard.

Just how difficult is this trek ?, is it too much for novices albiet very healthy novices ?

Also will we need any specialist equipment for this trek (a good sleeping bag has already been recommended)

Thanks again for any help

Ron Jeremy.

Hi Ron & Jeremy

I trekked Gokyo and Kala Pattarby myself in March 02 . It is medium-hard which means any fit person can do it. You do not need any special gear for Gokyo Ri. It is simply a steep walk up the hill! Just give yourself more time if you need to. I do recommend something to keep the wind off you when you get to the top. You will want to spend as much time as possible admiring the view. I spent an hour . Most people leave early in the morning to get a clear view.
Actually the only thing that will make it hard is altitude acclimatisation. Those who rush getting to Gokyo from Lukla (usally those in organised groups)will usually have more altitude problems. The solution : take it easy getting there.
It will be cold in April but not that bad.

The views off Gokyo Ri are some of the best you can get in the Everest region see www.dungevalley.f9.co.uk lots of pictures and advice.
Do try and take as much time as possible as you ascend also you could easily fit in the climb over the Chulu Pass to Everest base camp.
Lots of trekking agents run trips if you do not have the confidence to do iit yourself.

Have a good trek

If you are acclimatized well, the walk up to Gokyo Ri should be no problem. No technical skills needed.

The view from up there is very good, though in my opinion its even better when you walk up to the fifth Lake (Scoundrels View). From the viewpoint there (Knobbys View) it must be one of the best in the Khumbu. I havent been up there but it must be better, cos you dont have the lower foothils in the way as from Gokyo Ri. You see straight through a Glacier Valley.
Jamie McGuiness Guidebook also recommends it...
