Namaste Rishi, and best wishes to all your countrymen

I very much hope that todays elections have gone well, at least as good as can be expected. People form all over the world are hoping that this will bring the next chapter on the road to democracy and pease in Nepal.

This (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7339813.stm) is what the BBC have reported in their news, with pictures (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7340563.stm).

We look forward to seeing results.... http://election.gov.np/EN/results/ ...."coming soon"

:)

Nepal's Maoists extend poll lead (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7344983.stm) [BBC]

Nepal's Maoist party has increased its lead as results are declared from landmark elections.
The former guerrillas have won 42 out of 76 seats declared, well ahead of all other parties, and far more than many analysts had expected.

Like everyone I am interested in what is happening in the CA elections but I am a bit non-plussed as to what to think. My first thought is that it will be terrible that the Maoists win as it will be a victory for guns, intimidation and being murdering ******** (although the British standard of living I enjoy has a lot to owe to that method), my second thought is that if that is the will of the people to democratically elect the Maoists then that can only be supported. My third thought is what business is it of mine to have an opinion on what the Nepali people choose to do in their own country.

There have been some interesting reports on the BBC recently from some Nepali expert analysts stating things like "the Maoists have studied and implemented Mao's guerrilla tactics to bring themselves to this point but are not totalitarian communists in that vein and now may step forward to try and bring more equality to a corrupt power structure." My view has always been that totalitarian rule was their aim but perhaps that isn't so. But power corrupts and aboslute power corrupts absolutely. Does anyone have optimism when the Maobadi have a mandate to shape the constitution? What will they do?

I read in the news today that the Constituent Assembly has now ratified the proposal to end the monarchy and declare Nepal as "an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular and an inclusive democratic republic nation".

BBC article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7424302.stm) & pictures (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7423255.stm)

The assembly has two years to come up with permanent arrangements for a new constitution.
