Hi Jonathan,
I saw your note about going to Gorak Shep on your one. You are not crazy: I am a 42 year old woman and I have been trekking on my one to Everest/Gokyo valley a few times.
Some tips if you like:
take the 7 o clock express bus to Jiri!! departure at the old bus station, buy 2 tickets and put your backpack besides you.
although the Maoist are active, I did not have any problem in 2002. Sometimes they anounce a strike, and than you have to stay a day in your lodge. They do not give problems to tourists.
December is a very cold month, October/November are good, but than the winter starts, so if you are a freezing person, take some extra warm stuff with you.
A fine lodge in Tamel: Newa Guest House, a room for about 400 rps, with shower and towel. Nice people overthere!
Enjoy your trip, Nepal is great!!!
bye, Marijke
