Bill, as Spencer said, tourist buses may be your best option if you want to save money. It takes about 7 or 8 hours and the drive is spectacular. You have the option of taking either regular tourist buses without AC that cost about Rs 300 (US$ 4) or those with AC for about Rs 700 or so ($10).

If you want to fly, which is definitely the most comfortable option, it takes about 30 minutes and costs $67. On top of that you pay an insurance surcharge of $2 (while booking) and an airport tax of Rs 165 ($2.25) at check-in. The flight is also spectacular if the weather is favorable. Make sure that you choose a seat on the right if you are flying from Kathmandu and left when coming back (same thing if going by bus) to get the best views. By the way, avoid RNAC as its flights are subject to frequent delays and cancellations. There are many other airlines to choose from that are more reliable. Buddha Air, Necon Air, and Mountain Air top the list.

You can purchase tickets for both bus and plane from virtually any travel agency in the Thamel area. You may want to purchase them at least a day or two in advance.
