My friend and I would like to do EBC trek in 3 Dec. Is it too cold? What is the most scenic treking route? Is it better to do in a bigger group or just 2 person? Anyone else interested to start EBC trek in 3 Dec? What is a reasonable amount to pay for porter/guide and fligth to Lukla?

Hi,
I will arrive on the 6th December, you will then probably be already gone.
2 People is ok, though I think 3-4 people is the best size. More people can be fun, but also create more problems, finding same pace, and co-ordinating different interests etc.
All I have found out, is that it IS cold, so take a good sleeping bag and a down jacket. But its doable. During the day when you walk its probably ok, but in the evening and nights it can be freezing...
Bye

I read from a website recomending independent gudie rather than go through middle man, i.e. agency. has anyone tried the independent guide and what are your views? reliable and safe?
i wld like to do the Gyoko route, but heard it requires more days. any better route recommendations?

Hi,
Yes, It is a lot good idea to do the trek with independent guide and porter, we did the same last year. we went to Gokyo Ri and had a wonderful time. We felt so happy to pay the guide directly and we were served better than any agency. Our guide santaman did great job for our complete satisfaction, He is so knowledgeble about Nepal and societies. he speaks very good English rather than big company sirdar. We were accomodate in really nice lodges in Namche bazar with attach bath electric hot shower with good foods as well as serving us in very nice lodges as possible all the way during our trek. His email address is santamn@hotmail.com, you can contact him if you like. we were reccomended him by australian people Daniel. We were so lucky to find him.
Have fun, enjoy your trip. Gokyo Ri is just fantastic and like to be there several time, but this job always kills me.

How come the previous poster who is supposedly from Canada has an IP adress with ".np"???
Some guides are really pathetic, if that is what I guess it is. ADVERTISEMENT!!!
Nice try though, english is pretty good but still not 100% genuine ;-)

Hi
I trekked here in March 2002. Did it on my own. Generally there are people onthe trail so you are not really on your own, if you want company. The lodges are plentiful and routes are very obvious. Some prefer a porter but really it is not necessary. Most of teh Euroipeans with mountain experience seem to have it right-- they travelled very light and did not need a porter.
If you do want a porter /guide from memory they were about $8.00-$10 US. You can negotiate when you get off at Lukla /Jiri. You do not need to get one in Kathmandu. There are plenty of services so shop around.
The routes are pretty standard. Just alllow time for acclimatisation. I recommend you go to Gokyo as well.
