Hi, Three years ago TIMS wasn't around when I treked the Khumbu region for a month on my own and now I'm coming back to do a 'cultural' trek with friends in October.

'Rising Nepal' (http://www.gorkhapatra.org.np/content.php?nid=32797), says "The individual trekker will be responsible for their luggage, money and will not be able to hire extra help on the trail." As I intend to take my own guide and hire porters at Lukla, (beg your pardon Tenzing Hillary Airport), does anyone know how this will work in practice with the apparent TIMS restriction on independant trekers?

Any info gratefuly recieved.

Hm, usually these kind of measures, if seriously taken, are only so for one week or two, max. Else it takes to much concentration for the local authorities. I doubt they can be enforced. 6 weeks ago we hired on porter in Lukla, as one of our porters did not make it from his village to the Tribhuvan to fly with us to Lukla. There are porters and guides there from all parts of Nepal, earning a living.

Just wandering, padre, if I should take some holy water with me on my next trek. Just to complement for the water in the brain which I normally have (AMS or no AMS).

As ever, good to hear your words of wisdom Yakshaver. I suspected as much with regard to the ability to police TIMS. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

With regard to the holy water I can cut you a special deal and I'll ship it from the UK, or maybe just send the blessing and you can do it yourself :)

Regarding the holy water, very kind of you. I guess if the Saviour managed to heal a the centurion's servant by remote, your blessing should work ok. Looking forward to my next trek. Thanks and God bless.

If you are wanting to hire porters in Lukla then it might be a good idea to contact Porters Progress (http://www.portersprogress.org/). They have an office in Lukla and I believe they routinely help independent trekkers and porters get together. They do a lot of very good work for porters welfare, at the very least they are good to loan some extra clothing to under equipped porters, and so make a worthy cause for donations of your old clothes and spare $$$.
